The concept behind De Telepoort is to restore the disappeared city gates around the historic city of Gouda, at a place that now represents the new city entrance, the railway- and busstation. For the design, we were inspired by historical elements such as the vaulted ceiling of the town hall, the open pavilion structure of the Visbanken and the portals of the St. Janskerk.
De Telepoort is a golden, metal gate with a vaulted ceiling of mirrors. This structure reflects the dynamics of the station square from different angles. It invites people to walk through the pavilion, and it invites them to view the work of art and each other from different and surprising perspectives.
De Telepoort opens from the exit of the station towards the city center. From a distance, a floating ball is created where the mobility of the people on the station square becomes visible. When visitors look straight up from underneath the artwork, they experience the route that leads to the historic city center of Gouda.
